County Executive Commemorates 50th Anniversary of Civil Rights Act

New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon proudly celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on Wednesday, July 2.

The landmark legislation helped America begin to change course in history by outlawing racial segregation and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin in employment, places that serve the public, and schools. The Civil Rights Act also ended disparities in voter registration requirements.

“This was a monumental step toward recognizing the humanity and dignity of countless souls,” County Executive Gordon said. “We have made a lot of strides since 1964. However, we must remain as vigilant as ever to ensure the true spirit and letter of this monumental Act continues to be followed.

“In New Castle County Government, we are not just an equal opportunity employer. We have worked hard to hire a diverse staff and workforce that resembles the community it serves,” County Executive Gordon said. “We set the example by assembling a diverse administration, and the departments followed suit with some exemplary recruiting for exceptional talent.”

In addition to his commitment to diversity, County Executive Gordon is working every day to find ways to spur economic development and restore the decimated middle class amidst a backdrop of record corporate profits.

“The Civil Rights Act was a big step in making sure people didn’t get pushed around,” he said. “It is the same kind of attitude I bring to work with me every day.”
