All New Castle County Libraries will provide contactless curbside delivery of books, DVDs, and other media to library patrons.
Curbside Pickup Process:
- Contact your library to place a hold on an item.
- You will receive a text or email notifying you that your hold is available for pickup. Call the library to schedule your pickup date. Pickup dates vary by library, see below for schedule.
- Drive to your library pickup location. Signs will mark designated waiting areas for pickup. (Patrons using the Claymont Library will use the building’s drive-through window).
- Once parked, contact the library and let them know your name, hold info, and your parking spot number.
- Staff will retrieve your checked out items, and bring them to your car. Remain in your vehicle with the trunk open, and your mask on. Library staff will place your items in the trunk and move away.

What safety precautions are library staff taking?
All staff members are required to wear gloves, a face mask, and will practice safe social distancing from other staff members and members of the public during the Curbside Pickup Service. Items returned to libraries are quarantined for three days before being checked in.
Do I need to wear a mask?
Anyone picking up materials must wear a mask.
What if I don’t have a car, but still want Curbside Pickup Service?
Walkup Service is available at all libraries offering Pickup Service. When you arrive, please find the designated waiting area for Walkup Service and call the number listed on the sign. When you call the phone number, staff will retrieve your items and let you know that they are coming out to place your materials on the Pickup Service table. Do not approach the table to retrieve items until the staff tells you it is safe to approach the table to retrieve your items. Patrons must wear masks.
How do I place items on hold/reserve?
Beginning June 15, you can place items on hold by calling your local library or using our online library catalog. Once your hold is available, you will be notified. Please refer to the hold pick up notice for the deadline to pick up your items. After that date, your item(s) will be placed back on the shelves.
How long can I keep checked out materials?
Most materials checked out during Curbside Service will be checked out for three weeks until further notice. DVDs now can be checked out for one week as they were previously.
I returned an item but it is still showing up as checked out on my account, why?
Libraries are quarantining items for at least 72 hours. After the quarantine, items are checked in and backdated to their return date. You will not be fined.
I have items checked out right now, when are they due?
The due date was July 1 for items checked out before we closed our buildings in March. Please return or renew those items.
Who can check out items?
Anyone with a valid library card will be able to check out items.
My library card has fines on it. Can I still check out materials?
In most cases, you will be able to check out material even with a fine on your account. Please contact your local library for additional detail.
I don’t have a library card. Can I check out items?
You can apply for a library card online. Once your online application is complete, you will be able to check out materials.
I had items on hold, but I no longer need them, how do I cancel the hold?
Contact your local library to cancel your holds.
How do I renew items?
You can renew items online or by contacting your local library. If an item has a hold on it, you will not be able to renew it and it must be returned to the library.
My library card expired, how can I renew it?
If your library card has expired, you may renew it online, by logging into your account. If you need additional assistance, you can contact your local library.
I’m not sure what I want. Can you help?
Yes, you can call the library and ask for suggestions or just ask us to choose a selection for you based on genres and reading levels.

Can I return the materials I checked out?
Library book drops will open on June 1. After this date, you can return any library items to any library branch. Please note, returned items are being quarantined for 72 hours before being checked-in and recirculated. Because of this, it may take up to five days for a returned item to appear as "returned" in your account. But don’t worry - there are no fines or late fees right now.
When will libraries reopen?
New Castle County Libraries value and miss our patrons. We are looking forward to the day when we can safely reopen library doors. We are monitoring the situation closely and hope we will be able to begin incrementally resuming additional services soon.
Are there any library resources I can use while branches are closed?
Yes. The Library provides a wide array of digital offerings, including e-books, audiobooks, magazines, and streaming movies. The Library has introduced access to virtual services including access to new eResources such as hoopla, creativebug, and Transparent Language. Visit our Online Services page to learn more.
What other services are you offering?
While our buildings are closed, library staff have worked to create a robust schedule of virtual programs for all ages. Parents with children can find storytimes and other literacy activities, as well as music, motion, arts and crafts, STEM programs, and more. Beginning June 1 libraries will also be offering access to special performances available to watch via Zoom or Facebook Live. There are also plenty of programs for teens and adults from social meetups, book clubs, health and wellness, financial literacy, and more. Can I donate books to the library?
Unfortunately, due to the efforts to safely prepare our locations for socially distant services, at this time we are not prepared to accept book donations at any library location. Please do not leave donations on the curbside pickup table, and do not place donations in the book drops. We will gladly accept donations once again in the future and will make that announcement when ready.
